Getting into Scraps

When winter hits I want to feel cozy! Often that means it’s time to pull out my yarn stash.  I enjoy playing around with different crochet stitches, learning how they work, experimenting with color combinations and different weights of yarn.

It’s not about finished products, I just like the act of crocheting, it’s very soothing. The yarn is beautiful, tactile and forgiving.  You can unravel it if you don’t like it, starting over to try something different.

When I make a finished piece and it’s often something I absolutely love.  The time I’ve spent creating makes it feel so much more valuable.  Now that I’ve made a few things, I’ve ended up with a bunch of little bits of yarn that aren’t long enough for anything substantial and thought I should find a project to use them.

lots of little bits

I had different colors, all different lengths and it took a while to decide what I was going to do with them. I love The Unexpected Gypsy‘s style noticed one day that she was wearing these little fingerless gloves and I thought OMG that’s what I can make with all these little scraps. There’s not enough little bits to do anything big, but I could certainly make myself a little pair of fingerless gloves!  Something I can wear on cold days when I’m hanging out in my workshop. Or just, you know, doing some crochet.

I figured it would be pretty easy, they’re essentially squares sewn up with a slit for the thumb. I decided to use my favorite stitch, the moss stitch.  I made the project over 2 days, spending about an hour and a half for each glove.

I started by chaining a length that would go around my knuckles. I changed threads as I ran out of thread and as I started a new row. I had a lot of pink and orange so two rows were always those colours.  The third row ended up multi-coloured with all the short bits. I stopped when the length went from just above my knuckles to just below my wrist. I then stitched the seam, leaving a gap for the thumb, using the tail ends of thread from each row.

They’re not exactly pretty, the colors are kinda wild, and they’re imperfect, but I liked the challenge of figuring out how to make them, and now I have these little fingerless gloves to keep me cozy.

colourful and cozy

I can see how I might be able to make them longer, add a thumb, and make mittens! I’ve got lots of ideas and I’m looking forward to having more scraps in the future. Maybe I’ll try different stitches or make something bigger, leg warmers perhaps? Who knows what I’ll do next ๐Ÿ˜‰

Love Christy
